Celebrity chef Nadia Lim has had a lot on her plate this weekend, including an unexpected late-night visit to the hospital.
Throughout the past week Lim has been battling bronchitis, and about 1am on Sunday had to take herself to an accident and emergency clinic in Auckland after she began struggling to breathe.
“It’s an awful feeling, struggling to breathe,” Lim said from her dressing room for Dancing with the Stars on Sunday afternoon. “I’d been feeling sick for most of the week and had been trying not to take anything that I didn’t need to but I just realised I needed to see a doctor.
“It became really hard for me to breathe and my chest felt all tight and I thought, ‘okay, I’ve got to go get seen’. My children were asleep and Carlos needed to stay with them so I got an Uber to take me there.”
Dressed in what Lim described as “awful track pants, a scungy jumper and jandals”, she was dropped off in the wrong place and had to walk the rest of the way to the clinic.
“When I was there they helped clear my airways which was really good – all I could think about was how awful it must be for people to have respiratory issues.”
Lim was given an inhaler to use and sent on her way and said she’s “feeling good” and is ready for her Dancing with the Stars performance on Sunday night, despite not getting any sleep.
“I think all of the contestants have been going through it with illness and injuries but we all just love it so much we keep going.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be on this show and our bodies aren’t used to doing these movements, especially as we only have four days to learn a new dance.”
As for Mother’s day Lim, who has two children, said she hadn’t had a proper chance to celebrate yet as she was busy getting ready for Sunday night’s performance, but she had enjoyed poached eggs on toast for breakfast.
“Carlos cooked me breakfast which was lovely and my little one, River, who is only seven months, is coming in to see me this afternoon.”
One thing Lim was feeling thankful for on Sunday night was the chance to do a less high-energy dance.
“I’m performing the rumba tonight, I really like it because it’s really slow – it’s a very sexy dance.”
Lim said audiences could expect to see her wearing what she likened to “Baywatch togs” and the dance would take inspiration from a famous 80s movie that starred Tom Cruise.
All of the competitors had set such a high standard Lim said and she was excited to see everyone else perform as well.
“They’re all really awesome people, I know it sounds cheesy but we all get on so well – it’s funny we’re meant to be competing but I find myself watching and hoping everyone does well.”
Last week Lim and her dance partner Aaron Gilmore performed a tango to Rihanna’s throwback banger ‘Disturbia’, scoring 19 points.
To see Lim and Gilmore perform the rumba tune in to Dancing with the Stars NZ, which airs live at 7pm Sundays and 7.30pm Mondays on Three.
