Kim Kardashian has won a much-discussed lawsuit against Missguided USA, a fashion brand found to have sponged off her name and image to sell its products.

The label did not defend itself, and was ordered by the court to pay US$2.7 million in damages. Kim Kardashian mentioned how the site would reproduce knockoff designs “within hours” from her uploads, according to the BBC.

An example cited by the socialite involved a picture of herself in a gold dress designed by husband Kanye West. Merely hours after it was posted on Instagram, Missguided USA shared a photo of a lookalike model in a similar outfit with the caption, “The devil works hard, but Missguided works harder.”

She also said that the brand “systematically uses the names and image” of celebrities to market its products without paying them for the adverts.

Besides the hefty amount it has been ordered to pay back, the brand has also been banned from using Kardashian’s “trademarks in connection with the sale, marketing or distribution of its products.”

Missguided’s appropriations of Kardashian’s looks incited speculations that the reality television star was secretly and unethically working with the brand, so you can imagine how damaging these moves could be on her career.

Perhaps the lawsuit would serve as a timely warning for emerging brands against using celebrity figures for unauthorized advertising purposes.

Going through old fitting pics & found this gold look that Kanye made for me for my Miami trip last summer (I went w the neon vibes instead) P.S. fast fashion brands, can you please wait until I wear this in real life before you knock it off? 😂 pic.twitter.com/MZiGLmC0yI

It’s devastating to see these fashion companies rip off designs that have taken the blood, sweat and tears of true designers who have put their all into their own original ideas.

I’ve watched these companies profit off my husband’s work for years and now that it’s also affecting designers who have been so generous to give me access to their beautiful works, I can no longer sit silent.

Only two days ago, I was privileged enough to wear a one-of-a-kind vintage Mugler dress and in less than 24 hours it was knocked off and thrown up on a site – but it’s not for sale. You have to sign up for a waitlist because the dress hasn’t even been made to sell yet.
