Being a celebrity in this day and age often means you have a skill set well beyond the camera. If you have the money, influence, and capability to launch your own business or represent brands you believe in, then why not?
There’s now one major career development decision that’s been sweeping the lives of many — Hollywood A-listers included — since it was founded in 1992. Thanks to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition’s (IIN) unique and empowering curriculum, you can turn to trained individuals including stars like Miranda Kerr, Alicia Silverstone, Bobbi Brown, Emily Didonato, Nina Agdal, and more for unparalleled health support. They all studied at IIN alongside well-known teachers such as Deepak Chopra, Dr. Oz, and Gabby Bernstein. As the leading nutrition school, IIN is on a mission to redefine wellness by educating and training the next generation of holistic health coach and entrepreneurs.
What exactly is a holistic health coach? It’s someone who gives their clients mentorship and one-on-one encouragement through all health-related changes. While coaches aren’t doctors and can’t provide any sort of diagnosis, they are able to guide you to a healthier lifestyle. For instance, if your doctor recommends a certain diet, a coach can be there for you by creating a customized meal plan.
Overall, these wellness advocates are there to highlight necessary tools and skills that can enable you to exceed your health goals. The new year is right around the corner, so there’s no better time to get the support you need for those upcoming resolutions. On the flip side, if you want to become a coach yourself, IIN is offering an enticing Black Friday promotion for 30% off tuition. For an inside look into the innovative company, Forbes spoke with fearless leader Jim Curtis, Head of Brand. Scroll through his interview to see what a typical class session was like for these celebs and understand more about his team’s vision for IIN.
Isis Briones: First, it’s incredible how long the company has been in business. What would you say was the biggest challenge through it all?
Jim Curtis: “We jokingly say that IIN is the ‘OG’ of wellness because we created the health coaching market before it was a thing. Our founder built the company out of a small kitchen in Manhattan with a big mission in mind.
Soon, it was a large classroom in Union Square, but one of the biggest changes the company has seen was in 2009 when the course was transitioned to be primarily online. While it has remained a priority to give our students and graduates the opportunity to connect in person and over the phone — with coaching calls, local meet-ups, and live events — transitioning the course to its online format where it can be accessed from anywhere, at any time, has made IIN more accessible, and has given our community the ability to connect anywhere.”
IB: Can you elaborate on what a standard class was like and do most of the celebrity students have private sessions?
JC: “What’s amazing about IIN is that the course can be taken anywhere and that our students are able to connect with other students and graduates both online or in-person. While the course itself lives online, we also host a myriad of events — from our renowned live inspirational conferences to our smaller, more intimate gatherings — all of which are focused on connecting and inspiring. We also hold and operate on the strong belief that all of our students are equal, so our biggest celebrity students and influencers all belong to the same community, where they connect with, teach, learn from, and inspire each other together; online, at events, and in IIN coaching circles.”
IB: Does the company have plans of teaming up with a university to offer classes or will IIN continue to focus on webinar options?
JC: “IIN is licensed by the New York State Board of Education (NYSED), in addition to the Ohio Department of Education. This means we’re held to the highest standard of curriculum development as we have to provide our curriculum for regular review to both boards.
We’re also one of the only health coaching programs on the market that provides students with the opportunity to apply their Integrative Nutrition education for credits towards higher education. IIN is partnered with one of the largest university systems in the U.S., also known as The State University of New York, in addition to other higher-ed institutions that will take up to 40 credits to put towards a degree, program, or continuing education endeavors. Some of these institutions include Maryland University of Integrative Health, Goddard College, California Institute of Integral Studies, and Excelsior College. This opportunity to apply their health coaching education in order to pursue further education is unlike what any other health coaching school offers and it truly sets us apart.”
IB: Are classes offered in other languages and does IIN have plans to expand to other regions around the world?
JC: “Our student/grad population are from 155 different countries around the world. In total, we have over 100,000 graduates. Therefore, to make the curriculum even more accessible, we have recently introduced a Spanish-supported version of the course. Next, we plan on building out the course to support local dialects in Australia and the UK.”
IB: What exactly have graduates gone on to do after completing IIN’s program?
JC: “We’ve seen our graduates go on to pursue many different types of careers with their health coaching education. Many who practice as health coaches do so in a one-to-one setting, in addition to group settings. They build their own private practices and do so full-time or part-time.
Aside from coaching, some of our most successful graduates have gone on to create products such as Purely Elizabeth, the healthy granola & food products company, and Sakara Life, the clean meal delivery service.
They’ve also gone on to establish beautiful wellness spaces such as The Well, an all-in-one space in NYC where you can get coached by health coaches, as well as receive an array of treatments. Moreover, we’ve had graduates that were already successful in their own fields including Bobbi Brown and former professional athlete Nick Hardwick who used the training to bring health back into his field.”
IB: Where do you see IIN in 10 years?
JC: “IIN is growing fast! Since our new leaders joined, we created a plan to offer our students, alumni, and potential new community members a more interactive marketplace. We envision it being an exchange with marketing, content services, advanced credentialing, personal learning, and of course, more in-person events. 2020 is going t
