Japanese food is popular among candy lovers. My mother made her first trip abroad to Japan when I was a child. They brought out these amazing, chocolate covered cookie sticks and they were a childhood favorite of mine. Poke was once difficult to find in the United States, but today the popular dish can be found in many grocery stores and international markets. Now you can get the popular breakfast in different flavors like strawberry, cookie, cream and matcha green tea.

I asked my friend from Spain what food he recommends from his country and he said chapa chips. I found a bag of these flavored lollipops at a store down the street and discovered that this candy brand is popular with adults and kids alike. (If someone asks you why you like lollipops when you’re an adult, you can tell them Salvador Dali designed the logo for the lollipop. That’s how you appreciate art.) Strawberry Creme seems to be everyone’s favorite flavor. I bought it and tried it.

There are so many candy options in Germany that it’s hard to choose just one. A friend of mine told me that a few years ago he was at the Rittersport headquarters with the youth and found a place that offered interesting chocolate gifts and made their own Rittersport bars. Two treatments stand out from my memories of Germany. The first is Haribo, the famous German candy company that created the original gummy bears. Our family in Germany makes sure we have a steady supply of Haribo snacks whenever we visit them. When we visited Germany on vacation a few years ago, they introduced us to delicious Milka chocolates in the form of giant chocolate Santas. (Yes, they also have chocolate ghosts, if you’re looking for a spooky treat.)

Our family first discovered Benchi Choco Snacks through Universal Yums International Snack Box. Imagine chunks of fluffy chocolate chip cookies covered in white chocolate – yes, right? A visiting friend from Taiwan heard that our family loves to eat new foods and ordered us a box of Taiwanese food. These cognac jellies are some of the funniest we’ve picked. Imagine a little sweet-smelling Jello in a little bag. You may be familiar with similar jelly cups from other Asian countries, but this version is made without food coloring or preservatives, and the ingredients are vegan and non-GMO.

When we visited my sister-in-law in Vienna a few years ago, one of the first things on her itinerary was to introduce us to an Austrian manor with a Napoleonic waffle bar. He knew I had a sweet tooth and rightly decided that I should try one of the most popular breakfasts in Austria. On the long night train ride, we had candy and they were the comfort food we needed for a reasonable adventure. Whether you try Neapolitan, Chocolate, Vanilla, Coconut or Lemon, the bars are light, crunchy and satisfying. Bonus: Most varieties are dairy-free!

A friend who moved to South Africa a few months ago polled her teenage and middle-aged daughters about candy and they said Bar One had the best candy bar. Chocolate bars made of nougat, caramel and milk chocolate were invented in South Africa more than 50 years ago.

When my husband and I first went on our honeymoon to the UK, we became addicted to Walkers Shortbread as the hotel staff left biscuits (or ‘biscuits’ in the UK) in our room every day. But I asked my friend, who now lives with her three children, to recommend the sweets. He introduced the famous Cadbury chocolates. Other offerings on his list include Colin the Caterpillar gummies and Percy Pig gummies, especially Fizzy Pigtails. The variety of gummies never ceases to amaze me. These sound so ridiculously cute, they are definitely going on my must-see list!

Tip: If you buy Cadbury chocolate in an American grocery store (yes, even in the UK section of an American grocery store), chances are it was made in America by Nestlé. Order from overseas (or plan a trip!) to get the real thing.

Candy For All Holiday Celebrations

New Zealand is on our travel bucket list, especially since we have an obsession with Lord of the Rings. I asked my mom friend what candy we would get when we went there and she said Pascal was the main brand of “candy” in New Zealand. He created Pascall Pineapple Lumps (chocolate-covered pineapple-flavored marshmallows), Jubes (chewy, sugar-coated gummy fruits) and Jet Planes (miniature airplanes, sure to please airplane buffs). Recommended.

There is no better way to appreciate different cultures and countries than with delicious food. Every October 31st, the BYU International Study Program (ISP) office hosts an international trunk or sweet treat, giving away approximately 500 candies from other countries only in an old leather travel bag.

We hear that British Cadbury bars, Korean chocolate pies and Japanese strawberry whales are to die for. But the treatment has mixed tricks.

“We deliberately try to have things that appeal to Western or American tastes,” says international program coordinator Aaron Rose. Tastes like sweet and sour, or spicy mango with real chili inside, tamarind flavored candies. By the end of the day, the cheeses are thin – usually penny buns and puffs surround tiny dried shrimp.

How Long Does Halloween Candy Last?

Unique flavors delight those who live abroad as missionaries or students—a record number of students (more than 1,900) participated in BYU’s 206 international study programs in 75 countries around the world last academic year.

Rose says, “This generation of students has an endless appetite for the world, and campus colleges are creating unprecedented opportunities to travel in specialized majors. In 2017, ISP launched its first program in Sardinia, and in January it launched the new London-Paris-Rome program, where students tackled all three in one semester.
