The gaffe happened during the G20 summit which was broadcast live on YouTube by India Today TV on September 9.

One commentator mistakenly said on air: “Tharman Shanmugaratnam is the new prime minister, [Lee Hsien Loong] is leaving now.”
In the video, Prime Minister Lee is seen walking the red carpet and meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Although the original video has been removed, according to Gutzy Asia, it has been circulating on several social media platforms.

“During live commentary at the G20 Leaders’ Summit, India Today was inadvertently told that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was the ‘outgoing Prime Minister’ and would be ‘replaced’ by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Unfortunately, both of the above information are factually incorrect. Lee Hsien Loong is the current Prime Minister of Singapore. Tharman Shanmugaratnam is the newly elected president of Singapore.”
Prime Minister Lee was in India from September 8 to 10 to attend the summit at the invitation of Modi, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
As the chair of this year’s summit, India aimed to promote inclusive growth and sustainable development under the theme ‘Vasudaiva Kutumbakkam’ or ‘One Country, One Family, One Future’.

He called on G-20 members to “refresh the mandates and rules of existing multilateral institutions” to address current global challenges.
On the topic of sustainable development, Prime Minister Lee also called on G20 countries to work together to finance private and public efforts to combat climate change, saying: “Governments cannot do it all alone.”
“Singapore is a low-lying alternative energy island nation. We therefore appreciate the challenges inherent in climate transitions. However, we believe that new technologies, new funding models and new markets offer us hope.”

Prime Minister Lee and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak met on the sidelines of the summit on September 9 and issued a joint declaration on elevating Singapore-UK relations to a strategic partnership.
The two countries aim to strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, as well as science and technology. The partnership has also expanded into new areas, such as sustainability and the green economy.
Prime Minister Lee congratulated Sunak in October 2022 when he became the new Prime Minister of Great Britain. This is their first personal meeting at the G20 summit.
