Despite modern society’s apparent difficulty in dealing with issues of death and dying, proper funeral and burial customs have long been embedded in Philippine history. Early Filipinos traced the importance of honoring the dead through funeral prayers and rituals since pre-colonial times. Today, there are a number of ways to properly mourn and send off the dead; which include underground burials, above ground burials in community mausoleums and cremation.

Cremation is a process that reduces the body to its basic elements under the influence of intense heat. This is an alternative burial method that dates back to B.C. It goes back to 3000. While cremation is widely practiced today as a form of bodily disposal, it was taboo in the 19th century because of its terrifying religious implications. The Catholic Church and the Islamic faith alike discourage this practice, promoting the belief that an intact body is important for physical resurrection.
