From Peggy Fleming’s debut to the Harding-Kerrigan scandal to American sweethearts Michelle Kwan and Tara Lapinski, skiers have been the face of the Winter Olympics.

Now: Fleming and her husband own a pub which closed in 2011. She is still involved in US figure skating promotions and was injured in a crash on Joe Biden’s motorcycle at the 2010 Olympics.

Theresa Weld Blanchard has won 21 US awards, the most in US Figure Skating history. She won nine women nine pairs (with Nathaniel Niles) and six ice dance titles (with Niles). Her total could be higher, but there were no US championships between 1915 and 1919 due to the effects of World War I (the women’s event was held in 1918). Weld Blanchard and Niles were also winning ice teams, founding SKATING Magazine in 1923. After Niles’ death in 1932, Weld was the sole editor until 1963.

Maribel Vinson Owen is the only person included in the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame As an individual skier, pair skier and coach.

She is an Olympic bronze medalist, two-time world medalist, nine-time US women’s champion and one-time US 6-time champion (four with partner George Hill). While still competing, Vinson Owen became the first female sportswriter at the New York Times. Her success in winning nine US Women’s Championships was later matched by Michelle Kwan. Albright was the first American female figure skater to win an Olympic gold medal. She retired from sports after winning an Olympic gold medal in 1956, but continued to participate in the sport. After a career in ice skating, Albright attended Harvard Medical School, where she became a renowned surgeon. In 1976, she was the Chief Physician for the United States Winter Olympics.

Carol Heiss was Olympic champion in 1960, Olympic silver medalist in 1956 and five times world champion. Heiss, one of only three women to win five consecutive world championships, became the first female skier to land an Axel twice. After retiring from sports, she starred in the 1961 film Snow White and the Three Stooges. She has coached American and world gold medalists.

Peggy Fleming was the only American athlete at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France to bring home a gold medal. Her victory marks a return to first place in the United States after the United States. Mole was lost in the crash of Sabena Flight 548 in 1961. A three-time world champion, she became a figure skater commentator for ABC Sports in 1981 and covered numerous US and world championships, including the Olympics. Today, Fleming and her husband, Dr. Greg Jenkins, still participate in the sport, hosting the Peggy Fleming Trophy, a competition focused on the artistic skill of the skier. Dorothy Hamill won the Olympic title in 1976 and went on to become world champion after that season. She is the last female skier to win the Olympics without a triple jump and is credited with creating the Hamill Camel. In 1993, she was named the Most Popular Athlete in America.

Dr. Debi Thomas is the only African-American woman who was an American champion and the first black skier to win a World Championship (1986) and a medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics (Bronze). Thomas, a three-time world medalist, and East Germany’s Katarina Witt skied their long program to music from “Carmen” which inspired the famous “Battle of Carmens”. Thomas, who studied engineering at Stanford University during her competitive career, received her medical degree from Northwestern University in 1997.

Kristi Yamaguchi is a 1992 Olympic women’s champion, two-time world champion and 1992 US champion. As a pair of skiers, Yamaguchi and Rudy Galindo are two-time US champions. In 1991, she led the US women to the World Championships.

Yamaguchi, Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan represent the only nation to win the World Women’s Forum. In 1996, Yamaguchi launched the Always Dream Foundation, which focuses on childhood literacy.
