According to a recent statement from the United States Geological Survey (USGS, click to read press release), earthquakes killed the most people in the past year since 1990. As of 7 January 2004, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs confirmed 32,819 earthquake-related deaths in 2003, and this figure is likely to rise as the number of deaths from the Iran Bam earthquake rises. For comparison, there were 1,711 deaths in 2002 and 51,916 deaths in 1990.
Major Earthquakes Around The World
This map shows the location of the largest or most damaging earthquake in 2003. Some smaller earthquakes are listed because they measure 4.5 or higher on the Richter scale, cause significant damage, or both. Unsurprisingly, most earthquakes are concentrated along the edges of Earth’s tectonic plates. Although some occur inside the plate. (See Putting Earthquakes in Place for more information.)

Earth’s crust is a mosaic of 16 rocky sheets called tectonic plates. The plates float above the planet’s molten core and occasionally rub against each other as they move. Their movements push up mountain ranges such as the Alps in Europe and the Himalayas in Asia, create volcanoes and cause earthquakes. Millions of earthquakes rock the world each year, but most are too small or too far away to be detected. The USGS records about 50 earthquakes each day, or nearly 25,000 earthquakes per year.
The USGS reports 18 major earthquakes each year, averaging between 7.0 and 7.9, and one major earthquake of 8.0 or greater. Last year was no exception. On September 25, 2003, a magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck Hokkaido, Japan, causing injuries but no deaths. The USGS lists 13 earthquakes in 2003 ranging in magnitude from 7.0 to 7.9 and another 18 earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 6.5 to 7.0.
The most destructive earthquake of the year occurred on December 26, 2003 in Bam, Iran. The initial death toll from this quake is estimated at 30,000 (some believe this number could rise further). On May 21, 2003, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck northern Algeria, killing 2,266 people. The only deadly earthquake in the United States was a magnitude 6.5 quake in San Simeon, California on December 22, when buildings collapsed, killing two people.

List, Maps And Statistics Of The 20 Largest Earthquakes In 2020
The September 17th earthquake, although smaller, took more lives. The magnitude 7.1 earthquake killed more than 200 people in and around the capital, Mexico City.

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck northern Pakistan and Kashmir, killing 73,000 people. Millions of people were homeless.

On Friday, March 11, 2011, an earthquake off the Pacific coast of Japan was rated 8.9 by the USG Geological Survey (USGS), but four days later the Japan Meteorological Agency upgraded it to 9.0, making it probably the fourth. The largest earthquake since records began.
