Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Places To Visit – We’re starting to get into a good routine with baby, which includes learning how to have affordable family routines! We recently took a road trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on our way home from Michigan. Pittsburgh is three hours from where we live and we’ve been talking about visiting for a while. We were truly amazed at how walkable all of Pittsburgh’s beautiful architecture and the city’s historic districts were. Although the city is industrial, it is truly surprising how many classical elements there are. We only had half a day to explore the city, but we quickly discovered places to visit in Pittsburgh, PA and know we’ll be back for more tours!
The Dunesque Incline opened in 1877 and offers beautiful views of Pittsburgh! The funicular is 800 feet long and uses original (restored) wooden cars. We have been on many funiculars, but this is the only funicular that has been preserved in historic condition. The cars were also stripped of paint to reveal the original wood.

The Duquesne Slope was built to transport freight over Mount Washington in the late 19th century. Later it carried travelers, especially Mount Washington residents tired of walking the trails. Slopes were built all over Mount Washington during that time. But as more roads were built on “Coal Hill”, many other slopes were closed. By the late 1960s, only the Monongahela Slope and the Duquesne Slope remained.

The Duquesne slope was closed in 1962 and required major repairs. However, local residents organized a fundraiser to help Valu. The slope was reopened in 1963. The slope is beautiful and offers a beautiful view of the city, but with a short walk you can see the Point of View statue on Mount Washington, which most people forget! To be fair, the view from the Point of View sculpture is better than the Duquesne Incline Funicular. We also love seeing the trademark steel railings on our walk.
The Duquesne Incline is definitely a budget-friendly family day trip at $5 round-trip, but remember you’ll need exact change. However, the parking lot below Duquesne is charged by the hour.
The Cathedral of Learning surprised us as we walked to Primanti Borthers sandwich shop. We realized we had to make a longer stop in Pittsburgh because the architecture in general is really impressive. The Cathedral of Learning is located on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh and is the second tallest Gothic-style building in the world, the second tallest academic building in the world, and the tallest academic building in the Western Hemisphere (Wikipedia, one source. ) The first class was held in 1937.
Affordable Family Day Trip
The main part of the first floor of the cathedral is the Common Room, which has been called one of the “great architectural ideas of the 20th century”, an English Perpendicular hall in the 15th century Gothic style, covering half an acre (2,000). m2) and . Four stories, 52 feet (16 meters) high. Prize Room Andrew Mellon. It is a piece of true Gothic architecture. No steel supports were used in the construction of its arches. Each arch is a true arch and supports its own weight. Each foot for the arches weighs five tons, and each is said to be placed strong enough to hold a large truck. The large central columns serve only as screens for the structural steel supporting the upper floors of the building.
Upon entering the common rooms, there were iron gates on the gates, “Behold the Eternal Spring. The stars in the sky are new to you.” I was honestly surprised by the architecture and beauty of the common rooms. I felt like I was in a room in Europe, not in the industrial city I had previously thought of. Here you can visit the Cathedral of Education.
Across the green lawn from the Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh campus is the Heinz Memorial Chapel. The church was built in honor of the mother of the Haynes family and to honor her family’s educational and religious heritage. The chapel was originally intended for interdenominational use and “hosts about 1,500 events with more than 100,000 people a year, including prayers, weddings, concerts, classes, memorial services and guided tours (source).
Getting Around In Pittsburgh
The chapel is built in the Neo-Gothic style, designed by the same man who designed the Cathedral of Education. The structure of the chapel is an example of the style of religious buildings built during this period. What we like about the building are the American sculptures in stained glass next to the biblical sculptures.
On our way to the parking lot, we stopped by St. Paul’s Cathedral. Lucky us, right?! St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was founded in 1834 and is within walking distance of Carnegie Mellon, the Heinz Memorial Cathedral, and the Cathedral of Education. According to the previous structures I discussed in this post, the cathedral was built in the Gothic style inspired by the Cologne Cathedral.
I’ve been following Dayna from Pittsburgh on Instagram for years and she suggested we go to Primanti Brothers for lunch. An original shop was built near the industrial area to feed the workers. The original sandwich was created during the Great Depression. Basic sandwiches combine fries, eggs and meat in one sandwich. I don’t know what to think of eating all kinds of food in one sandwich, but we ate our sandwiches as fast as two people, haha! We loved the food and look forward to going back for another sandwich.

We love visiting Pittsburgh for an affordable day trip! We were surprised to see so much after half a day while paying only $5 each for parking, lunch and a round trip up the Dunesque Incline! Our baby, as always, is a great little traveler and we hope to return to Pittsburgh when the weather cools down a bit (100 degrees is not our cup of tea) to see the birds, zoo and botanical gardens. welcome To Pittsburgh!
