The survey, which the association conducts every 10 years based on U.S. census reports, shows a more diverse country in terms of other religions. And with few exceptions, geographic factors seem to be an important factor in each state’s second-most common religion.
Judaism dominates most of the northeastern part of the state, while Buddhism takes root in the west.
The study declared Southern Baptists as the most popular Christian denomination in the South, while Catholicism remained the largest in most parts of the country. Indeed, the Mormon faith remains the biggest ticket item in Utah, while Lutherans thrive in the upper Midwest, the survey found. According to a Pew Research Center report, the world is becoming more religious as non-religious people decline as a percentage of the world’s population.
The change in the number of religious followers is mainly due to the birth rate and the young age of many believers. Christianity, currently the dominant religion in the entire Western Hemisphere, is expected to remain the most popular religion in the world. By the year 2050, if current trends continue, four out of ten Christians will live in sub-Saharan Africa.
However, it is estimated that Christianity will decline in America. About two-thirds of Americans are expected to identify as Christian by 2050, down from three-quarters of the current population.
