With a displacement of 9.4 liters, it was the largest engine ever installed in a car built by the Detroit automaker. It was interesting, but something bigger was to come. No, this is not a joke. Chevrolet has just announced a 10.4 liter V8 crate engine that has over 1,000 horsepower.
Called the ZZ632 because of its 632 cubic inch displacement, it’s as bad as a crate engine. Forget the 1,000 horsepower Dodge crate engine. That’s four more.
What Is The Most Powerful Chevy Engine
First, the crankshaft and connecting rods are forged steel, and the piston is forged aluminum. The talldeck itself is made of solid cast iron and has the same four main bolt caps as the CoPO Camaro’s 572 Big Block. On top of that is an aluminum head with symmetrical ports, CNC machined at the factory and designed to allow equal flow to all the big cylinders. For context, a single ZZ632 cylinder is the same size as the entire engine in the top-of-the-line Chevrolet Trailblazer.
Chevy Small Block: The Little Engine That Did
The oil used by this engine is quite normal compared to other engines. Standard 93 octane is available at most gas stations. It is electronically injected into the port instead of being injected into the cylinder via a direct injection system. Combine this fuel delivery with 12.0:1 compression, a massive single-jet exhaust, and a 7000 rpm redline, and 1,004 horsepower is actually very attainable, as is the engine’s 876 lb-ft of torque. With plenty of aftermarket support for the big-block, there’s no question that with or without induction, this engine is capable of well over the 1,004 horsepower figure. At 10.4 liters, the displacement is quite large, and the forged lower part is certainly ready to take the punishment.
But let me be clear, this is not a brand new engine. Casting is the same as the smaller 572, but the cylinder bore is 0.040″ larger and the stroke is increased by 3/8″ to accommodate the additional displacement. Chevrolet says the block will also have to be modified to accommodate this larger stroke, and a bespoke connecting rod will have to be made as well.

The Detroit automaker didn’t release a price for the impressive new engine, but the 572-horsepower 727 normally costs about $16,000. The price of this new 632 is expected to be around that. The Big Block V-8 reaches peak power at 6,600 rpm and returns to a recommended maximum of 7,000 rpm. Fuel is supplied by an 8-port injector and the engine breathes through a CNC-machined high-flow aluminum cylinder head with symmetrical ports. While big-blocks are traditionally designed with different port shapes for each cylinder, the ZZ632’s eight intake ports are all the same length, volume and layout. Likewise, all exhaust ports on the ZZ632 are identical. This matching ensures that all individual cylinders produce the same output.
These RS-X symmetrical cylinder heads are named after powertrain engineer Ron Sperry. Ron Sperry built it as one of his final achievements in more than 50 years working on General Motors performance and racing engines. Sperry also introduced matching ports to the small-block Chevrolet V-8, powered by the Gen III LS1 engine that debuted in the 1997 Chevrolet Corvette.
The ZZ632 steel block shares a mold with Chevrolet Performance’s ZZ572 crate engine, but the casting is machined to accommodate the larger 632 cubic inches of displacement. The bore is 0.040 inches larger compared to the V-8’s 572 cubic inches, and most of the displacement comes from a 0.375-inch longer stroke. To make room for the longer stroke, engineers modified the block and connecting rod. A four-bolt main cap and rotating forged assembly ensure strength and durability. During development, one engine survived more than 200 drag models on the dynamometer.
