Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, so it’s no surprise that they’re on the list of the most intelligent animals. We share almost 99 percent of our DNA (the little bits of genetic code that make us who we are) with them. It turns out they share some of our brain power too. In a study published in 2007, researchers gave adult chimpanzees, adolescent chimpanzees and university students the same cognitive test. The test consisted of remembering where a list of numbers – from one to nine – was on a touch screen.

Chimpanzees and humans saw the numbers in their places for less than a second. They were then asked to remember where these numbers had been and show the researchers. The adult primates and humans performed about the same. But the young chimpanzees left them both in the dust. They remembered each number’s location with much better accuracy. Researchers believe that these young people used a type of photographic memory, which allows a person to remember images with extremely high accuracy even if they only looked at them for a fraction of a second.

Scientists have long believed that goats are much smarter than their unassuming behavior leads many of us to believe. Finally, a group of researchers in Australia decided to put these barnyard animals to the test. To do that, they set up a device that held fruit at the end. To access the tasty treat, the goats had to use their teeth to pull down a rope, which activated a lever that they had to lift up with their mouths. If they could figure all this out, the fruit was theirs.
Nine out of 12 goats completed the task after about four attempts. When the researchers had all the goats try again 10 months later, the majority still remembered how the system was supposed to work.

Anyone who has interacted with an elephant knows that these animals are very smart. But are they among the smartest animals in the world? Researchers have conducted a number of studies on the subject. It was found that elephants can tell the difference between language and whether a man, woman or child is speaking.
How do they know that? In Africa, only certain tribes hunt elephants. Researchers played back recordings of one group hunting them and one not. When the elephants heard the recordings of the elephant hunting group, they got scared and moved away from where the sound was coming from. When they heard the language of the group that was not chasing them, they did not move or change their posture. The researchers then played recordings of the language that frightened them, but which included women, children and men. The elephants only got scared when the voice came from men – they are on the hunt.
One way researchers measure intelligence is something called the mirror self-recognition test. The idea behind this test is to find out if an animal can recognize itself in front of a mirror. To find out, researchers place a colored marker on the animal’s body. Then they place them in front of a mirror. Most often, if the animals recognize themselves, they will show signs of trying to remove the tag from their body, such as scratching or rubbing it off.
Why Some Chimps Are Smarter Than Others
Many animals fail this test. When they see their reflection in the mirror, they think it is another animal of their kind, and either run and try to fight or scare the stranger.
When researchers placed tags on dolphins, aquatic animals examined spots in their reflections. In other words, they knew that the mark belonged to them, and not to another animal; they knew the dolphin in the mirror was them.
It’s hard to imagine that a crow could be as smart as you, or maybe even smarter. But researchers have done a number of studies that show they can be just as good, or better, at solving problems. In one study, researchers gave crows and humans the same puzzle: A toy floats on top of water in a tall glass, too narrow for a bird to get its beak down or for a small child to put its hands in. Children younger than eight are completely mute and can generally not figure out a way to get hold of the toy. But crows are not confused at all. They simply drop pebbles into the narrow glass. Eventually, the stones displace enough water at the bottom of the glass that the toy rises to the top, and the birds can quickly grab it.
Recent Research Shows That Bears Could Be The Smartest Animals
Bees are best known for their stings. But they are also very intelligent little creatures. Researchers taught bees to identify which of two horizontal lines was above the other. When they got the answer right, they got a sugar syrup reward. The thing is, the researchers only taught them how to identify whether lines that were horizontal were above or below. So when the researchers showed the vertical lines of the buzzer, the bees simply flew away. They knew there was no way to get that tasty treat!
Octopuses are in a league of their own. Most invertebrates do not have the level of intelligence that scientists say these oddly shaped sea creatures have. In a cool study, scientists tested whether the creatures could distinguish between two different people. They had two individuals interacting with an octopus, one acting extremely friendly and another being cold and repulsive. After a short while, when the two people entered their living room, the octopus ignored the impersonal in favor of the more friendly guest.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, rats can also learn to play hide and seek.
