Compared to Japan, Okinawa is very close to the equator and is a very hot place, so the temperature in Okinawa is mild throughout the year. Lucky for you, that means you only have to worry about two seasons: wet and dry. The rainy season usually lasts from October to April and the wet season from May to September. However, the rainy season is not wet, well, wet. It rains and there is more chance of rain, but not every day of the tour!
I visited Okinawa for the first time from late June to July, and while we experienced typhoons, the weather was pretty good most days, so don’t let the word “rainy season” stop you from visiting those months. . To be honest, I don’t think there is a bad time to visit Okinawa except for the cold months of November to February, even then it’s not “bad”.
The best time to visit Okinawa is from May to September and I believe that May is the best month to visit Okinawa.

This may sound strange, but the best time to visit Okinawa is during the rainy season…August and September. There’s a lot of stuff online that says to avoid all rainy weather because, well, rain (duh), but I’m going to go ahead and think they’re basing their opinion on data, not actual events. No. I know! I visited Okinawa for five weeks from mid-June to mid-July 2016 and experienced the rain for several days during the rainy season. Alternatively, I visited again in 2018 and experienced rain and drizzle during my two weeks during the sunny, mid-April period.
I did not include the best weather in July or August because those months are very hot and humid. You will have a better experience during the shoulder months of May and October.
The best time to visit Okinawa islands and beaches is the same except for June, which is the best time to visit in good weather, as the weather is much warmer than May, perfect for those who love warm weather. June is not as harsh as July and August, and even though it is the rainy season, it won’t rain every day of your trip and hurricane season hasn’t arrived yet. It may be a controversial month for some, but I think it’s a great time to visit the beaches and escape to the island. For the other months, they have warm weather and are out of hurricane season and get an A+ in my book!
Kouri Island (kourijima)
January is not a good month to visit Okinawa for several reasons: most beaches are closed and the weather is in the 60s. The downside is that you come here to live rather than chill on the island, so if you want to see, swim or chill in other islands in the region I’d recommend waiting until April or May to consider visiting. Beach. If you’re planning to visit Okinawa in January, you’ll want to leave your island clothes at home.
On the other hand, if you’re looking to celebrate the new year in Okinawa, the New Year Festival, or “Shinshun no Utage,” is held at Shuri-jo Castle, featuring traditional entertainment from the past. The king of the Ryukyu kingdom and all his ministers. Unfortunately, large parts of the 450-year-old building burned down at the end of October 2019, and unless efforts are made to rebuild the building after the first fire in World War II, the festival will have to be held elsewhere in the new year. .
February in Okinawa is a little warmer than January, but a little more humid, so be sure to pack a light raincoat if you plan to visit this month. Temperatures will be in the 70s rather than the 60s, so it’s quite warm, but if you want to see the beauty of the Japanese cherry blossoms, they are forecast to bloom in Okinawa from late January to early February. March/April Interior. I recommend that you stay with the forecast, because even if you change your itinerary by a few days, you could miss a great flower window!
Stunning Okinawa Is Japan’s Hottest Destination
In general, February is a good time to travel. Many beaches are still closed and island hopping is out of the picture, but cherry blossoms and spring-like weather are guaranteed if you want to avoid the heat, humidity and crowds of the summer months.
A few weeks in March in Okinawa tend to welcome the island with clouds and rain. Although March is not the rainy season, it still rains quite a bit this month and the weather will be cooler than 65 / 70 degrees so you will want to bring an umbrella and warm clothes to deal with the cloud / rain.
On the other hand, the latter half of the month is warmer, with highs in the 70s, which means most of the island’s beaches are open and you’ll be able to enjoy the powdery, white-sand beaches that Okinawa is sold for. March in Okinawa is great if you want to avoid the crowds and save a little money, but the weather hasn’t been great, so I’d wait until April or May to visit.
The Busena Terrace, Okinawa Main Island
Okinawa opens all of the island’s beaches in April for about half of the month. This month is the best time to visit Okinawa because the crowds are less, the temperature is warmer if you don’t like hot and humid weather, and the prices are cheaper because it is the shoulder season before the crowds of April Holy Week. to come The water temperature stays fairly cool, so you won’t want to swim as the water is in the 70s.
I visited Okinawa in April and it was mostly cloudy and rainy even though it was part of the dry season. I had better weather during the July storm since my first visit! It is a tropical island, so the weather can always be unpredictable, so you can get sunshine in April. Based on my trip I wouldn’t consider the beach in April, but check the weather before you go to be sure. Obviously Okinawa isn’t all about the beaches, but if you want to explore waterfalls, island hopping and swim, I’d wait until May or June when the sea and air temperatures warm up a bit.
The weather in Okinawa in May brings several things: cool weather, golden week and rainy season. From here, you can add a few things. 1. Avoid the first week of May. It’s called Golden Week, when everyone in Japan is on vacation and flocks to the island with the trees.
