Two years later, the 26-year-old was measured again in Ankara, Turkey, by which time he had grown to a staggering 251cm (8ft 2.8in).
Sultan was born on December 10, 1982, but didn’t begin his incredible leap until he was 10 years old.
Sultan’s extraordinary growth and great height is caused by a condition called “pituitary gigantism”, which is the result of an overproduction of growth hormone.

Growth hormone is released from the pituitary gland in the brain; if the gland is damaged by a tumor, for example, it may release too much (or too little) hormone. Effects of overproduction include large hands, thickening of bones and painful joints.
Due to his size, Sultan was unable to finish school and instead began working as a farmer to support his family.
He previously explained that one of the advantages of being tall is that he can help his mother with chores like changing a broken light bulb and hanging curtains.

Regarding the disadvantages of his height, he complained that he could not find clothes or shoes that fit him and that it was extremely difficult for him to fit into a normal-sized car.
As a teenager, Sultan signed a contract with the Galatasaray basketball team, but unfortunately he was too tall to play. However, he remains a fan of this sport to this day.
Speaking on the occasion of his entry into the Guinness World Records family, Sultan said: “I never thought I would be in the book, I dreamed about it, but it was still a big surprise.

Sultan also holds the record for the largest hands on a living person, each measuring 28.5 cm (11.22 in) from wrist to tip of middle finger.
He previously held the record for the largest living human foot, with his left foot measuring 36.5 cm (1 ft 2 in) and his right foot measuring 35.5 cm (1 ft 1.98 in).
During his first visit to London, United Kingdom in September 2009, Sultan expressed his hope that his newfound fame would change his life and help him find a wife: “It’s really hard to find a lover. They’re usually afraid. Now that I’m famous, I’ll be able to meet many girls. My dream is to get married.”

“I’d also like the chance to find the right clothes that fit me! I’ve already made a suit and at least one dream has come true: I now have jeans made just for me!”
In the years that followed, the giant’s life changed – with the publicity his positive image received, he used free life-saving surgery to stop his exponential growth. He also enjoyed special clothes and the opportunity to travel around the world.
A gamma knife operation on a tumor affecting his pituitary gland, performed by the University of Virginia, USA, in August 2010 stopped Sultan’s growth hormone production and prevented him from growing further.

According to the Guinness World Records website, Mr Wadlow suffered from a condition that caused his pituitary gland to hyperplasia. This resulted in extremely high levels of human growth hormone. However, Robert’s extraordinary height led to a number of health problems, which worsened as he grew – and got taller. But as a boy, he tried hard to get involved in the same activities as his peers.
As soon as the picture of the ‘Tallest Man Ever Lived’ hit the internet, netizens were left in awe. The user joked: “Wadlow is not in the “I only date men whose height starts with 6″ category.”
Mr. Wadlow died when he was only 22 years old. He died on July 15, 1940, in a hotel in Manistee, Michigan, of a septic hemorrhage in his right ankle caused by a prosthesis that had been improperly fitted just a week before.

A tall Turkish man was officially crowned the world’s tallest man on Thursday after his Ukrainian rival dropped out of the race after refusing to be measured.
Guinness World Records says Sultan Kosen, 2.47 meters tall, from the city of Mardin in eastern Turkey, is officially the tallest man walking on the planet. Although the previous holder, Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyk, was said to be 8 feet 5.5 inches (2.57 meters), Guinness said he was stripped of the title when he refused to let anyone determine his height.
Stadnyk, 39, told The Associated Press that he declined to be independently measured because he was tired of being in the public eye.

Kosen, 27, told reporters in London that he was looking forward to turning his new status into an opportunity for love.
“It’s been very difficult to find a girlfriend so far,” Kosen said through a translator. “I never had one, I was usually afraid of them… I hope now that I’m famous I can meet a lot of girls. I’d like to get married.”

Kosen is one of only 10 confirmed or reliably reported cases of people breaking the eight-foot (2.44-meter) mark, according to Guinness.
The record-keeping organization said he grew to his massive figure because tumor-related damage to his pituitary gland caused an overproduction of growth hormone. The condition, known as “pituitary gigantism,” also accounts for Kosen’s large hands and feet, which measure 10.8 inches (27.5 centimeters) and 14.4 inches (36.5 centimeters), respectively.
