Hannibal Hamlin (August 27, 1809 – July 4, 1891) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 15th Vice President of the United States from 1861 to 1865, the first term of President Abraham Lincoln. He was the first vice president of the republic.

Hamlin, by contrast, was an ally of the northern “Radical Republicans” (who later opposed Johnson). Lincoln and Johnson were elected in November 1864, and Hamlin’s term expired on March 4, 1865.
After leaving the vice presidency, Hamlin served briefly as collector of the port of Boston. Appointed to this position by Johnson, he resigned in opposition to Johnson’s Reconstruction policy and accompanied efforts to win over politicians after being rejected by Republicans. Republicans supported Johnson as part of the National Union ticket during the war, but opposed him after he became president and his position on Reconstruction diverged from their own.
Although Hamlin narrowly missed out on the presidency, his vice presidential bid created half of the state’s influence in the Maine Republican Party. Not struggling with private life, Hamlin returned to state in 1869 to serve two more terms before retiring from the race in 1880 due to a heart attack. His last act as a public servant came in 1881 when Secretary of State James G. Blaine persuaded President James A. Garfield to appoint Hamlin as United States ambassador to Spain. Hamlin took office on June 30, 1881, and served until October 17, 1882.
After returning from Spain, Hamlin retired from his public service at his home in Bangor, Maine, which he purchased in 1851. The Hannibal Hamlin House – as it is called today – is located in downtown Bangor at 15 5th Street. Featuring Victorian, Italianate and Mansard architecture, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
Hamlin was elected to the Third Class of the Loyal Legion of America. The Third Class was a section of MOLLUS designed to recognize civilians who had contributed significantly to the Union during the war.

On July 4, 1891, Hamlin collapsed while playing cards at the Tarratine Club he founded in downtown Bangor, and died a few hours later at the age of 81.
He was buried in Hamlin Cemetery in Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor. He outlived six of the vice president’s successors (Andrew Johnson, Schuyler Colfax, Henry Wilson, William A. Wheeler, Chester A. Arthur, and Thomas A. Hdricks), more than any other vice president of the United States.
